Meet Vivek Balachandar
Expert diagnosis, treatment and surgical care.
Mr Vivek Balachandar is a Consultant Knee Surgeon with a specialist practice dedicated exclusively to the diagnosis, treatment and surgical management of knee conditions. From sports injuries and ligament reconstruction to arthritis and knee preservation, he helps patients regain confidence in their movement and return to the activities that matter most to them.
Having trained at Sheffield Medical School and completed his specialist orthopaedic training in the region, Mr Balachandar has developed extensive expertise in the management of knee problems. He undertook advanced fellowship training at the renowned Wrightington Sports Knee Unit, one of the UK’s leading centres for knee surgery, further refining his skills in both sports knee injuries and knee preservation techniques.
Today, alongside his private practice, Mr Balachandar serves as a Consultant at Barnsley NHS Foundation Trust where he established a dedicated Soft Tissue Knee and Knee Preservation service. His approach combines specialist surgical expertise with clear communication, ensuring every patient understands their diagnosis, treatment options and expected outcomes before making decisions about their care.

A Patient-First Approach
Mr Balachandar believes that successful treatment begins with understanding the individual behind the injury or condition. No two patients are the same, and every treatment plan is carefully tailored to suit a person’s lifestyle, goals and expectations.
While surgery can provide excellent outcomes for the right patient, it is not always the first or most appropriate option. Mr Balachandar takes a balanced and evidence-based approach, exploring both surgical and non-surgical treatments to ensure patients receive the care that is best suited to their needs.
His experience extends across a wide range of knee conditions, from acute sporting injuries affecting athletes and active individuals to longer-term degenerative conditions that impact everyday mobility and quality of life. Having played competitive hockey for more than two decades, including at national league level, he understands first-hand the physical and psychological challenges that can accompany injury, rehabilitation and recovery.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Balachandar remains actively involved in teaching, research and training. He has presented nationally and internationally, received the prestigious South Yorkshire Getty Plate for excellence in orthopaedic research, and was selected to represent the region at the British Orthopaedic Association’s ‘Best of the Best’ meeting in 2023.
